SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO: what actually matters for a small business in 2026

SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO — four layers of search visibility explained

BLUF • THE SHORT ANSWER

SEO gets you ranked, AEO gets you quoted as the answer, GEO gets you cited by ChatGPT and other AI tools, and AIO gets you into Google's AI Overviews. They overlap far more than the acronyms suggest — Google says optimising for AI search is still SEO. A small business needs one plan that covers all four, not four agencies.

DZG • PERSPECTIVE

Every month there’s a new acronym. SEO, then AEO, then GEO, now AIO — and an agency ready to sell you each one separately. Here’s the plain version: they are four names for one job. Being found, being understood, and being trusted enough to be the answer.

The four, in one line each

  • SEO — search engine optimisation. Getting your pages ranked in Google and Bing results.
  • AEO — answer engine optimisation. Being the answer itself: the featured snippet, the “People also ask” box, the voice-assistant reply.
  • GEO — generative engine optimisation. Being cited or named when ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude write an answer. The term comes from a 2023 research paper on how content shows up in AI-generated answers.
  • AIO — AI Overview optimisation. Showing up in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. Some people use AIO to mean “AI optimisation” in general, so always ask which one is meant.

Why they overlap so much

Google answered this in its own guidance, updated in July 2026: optimising for generative AI search “is still SEO”. Its AI features draw on the same index, the same quality signals and the same pages that rank.

ChatGPT and other AI tools that search the web work the same way — they need pages they can crawl, understand and trust. So the foundations are shared:

  • Pages search engines and AI crawlers can reach and read
  • One clear page for each service, answering the question first
  • The same business details everywhere you appear
  • Real reviews and genuine mentions from other sites
  • Content only you could have written — your pricing approach, your process, your experience

Do those well and you are doing most of SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO at once.

Four acronyms. One job: be the business the answer is about.

Where they genuinely differ

The overlap is big, but the edges are real — and that is where the effort goes.

SEO cares most about technical health and competition for rankings: speed, indexing, site structure and links.

AEO rewards format. A direct answer in the first sentence under a question, short lists and clear tables give a search engine something it can lift as the answer.

GEO leans harder on what the rest of the web says about you. AI tools build their picture from many sources at once, so reviews, directory listings, press mentions and how consistently you are described carry extra weight.

AIO lives inside Google. Your Google Business Profile, product information and pages Google already trusts feed its AI Overviews, so local businesses should treat their profile as part of their website.

What a small business should do, in order

  1. Fix the foundations. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools set up, every page indexed, AI crawlers allowed, pages that load fast.
  2. Own your local listing. A complete Google Business Profile with services, photos, hours — and a steady flow of new reviews.
  3. Answer your buyers’ questions. One page or post per real question: cost, timing, comparisons, what can go wrong. Answer first, explain after.
  4. Be consistent and be mentioned. The same name, services and location across your site, profiles and directories. Earn genuine mentions from associations, suppliers and local press.
  5. Measure all four, monthly. Rankings, answer boxes, AI Overviews and AI tools in one report.

What not to pay for

  • A separate retainer per acronym. If the GEO agency and the SEO agency are both “writing content and building citations”, you are paying twice for one job.
  • llms.txt as a ranking fix. Google says its search ignores llms.txt files. Having one does no harm; buying one as a visibility service is money better spent elsewhere.
  • Special “AI schema”. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features. Ordinary structured data still helps search engines understand your pages.
  • Content chopped up for robots. Google says there’s no need to break content into tiny pieces for AI. Write for the person asking.
  • Bought mentions. Google’s guidance notes that inauthentic mentions across the web aren’t as helpful as they might seem.

The bottom line

Don’t buy acronyms. Buy one plan that makes your business easy to find, easy to understand and easy to trust — then measure where it shows up: in the rankings, in the answer box, in Google’s AI Overviews and in the AI tools your customers already use.

FAQ • STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Is SEO dead now that people use AI?

No. Google says optimising for AI search is still SEO, and AI tools that search the web lean on pages search engines can already find and trust. What changed is where your answer shows up — a ranking, an answer box, an AI Overview or a ChatGPT reply — not the work that earns it.

What does AIO mean?

It depends who's saying it. Most often AIO means AI Overview optimisation — showing up in Google's AI Overviews. Some agencies use it as a catch-all for any AI optimisation. Ask which one they mean before you pay for it.

Do I need a separate GEO agency?

Usually not. The work that gets you cited by AI — crawlable pages, clear answers, consistent business details, reviews and genuine mentions — is the same work good SEO already does. Pay for one plan that measures all four, not two retainers doing the same job.

Which should a small business do first?

The SEO foundations, then your Google Business Profile and reviews, then answer-first content. Those three cover most of AEO, GEO and AIO at the same time. Check AI tools monthly to see whether you're being named.

How do I measure AI search visibility?

Use Google Search Console — including its Generative AI performance report — for Google, and ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini your buyers' questions each month, noting who gets named and which sources they cite.
